The entire Spring River area is a virtual paradise for all sorts of outdoor activities. Cherokee Village has seven lakes for swimming and there is access to both the Spring River and the South Fork River inside the Village. The Village also has two 18-hole golf courses carved out of the Ozark hills that offer a challenge for every level of the game.
Cherokee Village also has two recreation centers with swimming pools, miniature golf and lighted tennis courts.
The Spring River is born in nearby Mammoth Spring and is the tenth largest spring in the world. Water flows from and underground cavern at the rate of 200 million gallons a day with a constant water temperature of 58 degrees.
The Spring River is one of Arkansas most popular trout rivers and is rated one of the nation's best float streams. In addition to the rainbow trout found in its upper reaches, there is also an abundance of walleye and bass in its lower stretches. Whitewater shoals and rushing falls challenge the canoeiest.
The South Fork River, a tributary of the Spring River starts in Missouri and joins the Spring River in Hardy. It's known for greate walleye and smallmouth bass fishing and is excellent for canoeing, especially during the spring months.
There is lots of canoe trips that can be taken on both rivers and there is an abundance of canoe outfitters in the area.
Another of the popular outdoor attractions is the Harold E. Alexander Wildlife Management Area, located six miles south of Hardy.
Hunting for deer, bear, turkey, quail, rabbit, squirrel, coyote, raccoon, muskrat, nutria, beaver, and crow abound in the management area. There is also good smallmouth bass fishing along Rock Creek.
There are also Nature and hiking trails in the WMA as well as primitive campground areas.
Other attractions close to the Spring River area include the Mammoth Spring State Park to the north of Hardy. Park facilities include a tourist information center, picnic sites, a playground, and ball fields. Many park visitors also enjoy a tour of the federal trout hatchery and aquarium nearby.
Of course if the outdoors is not your cup of tea, a variety of quality antique shops, gift stores, and specialty stores dot the entire Spring River area.
And this year, the once-popular Arkansas Traveller Dinner Theatre will re-open under new management. Plans are to bring back entertainment back to the theatre with live shows ever weekend. Look for more news about the theater or call the Spring River Area Chamber of Commerce for more information.
